Summer gives high school students time to explore questions that are hard to answer during the school year. If you are curious about dentistry, a summer program can help you see what the profession looks like up close.
In this guide, you will learn about the main types of dental summer programs for high school students and what students usually do in each one. You will also find a checklist to compare programs on safety, ethics, and learning value. Parents and school counselors will find tips to help students choose with confidence. Every option here is meant for exploration, so you can start with no prior experience.
What dental summer programs for high school students look like
Programs vary widely. Most fall into one of these groups.
University pre-health camps
Some universities and dental schools host short summer programs for high school students. These often include lectures, hands-on activities with models, and talks with dental students. They give a clear view of what studying dentistry involves.
Shadowing at a local dental office
Shadowing means observing a dentist during a normal workday. Students watch, ask questions, and learn how a practice runs. Each office sets its own rules for student visitors, so ask first.
Community volunteering
Health fairs, school oral health events, and community clinics often welcome young volunteers. Tasks may include greeting families, organizing supplies, or helping with education activities.
Service learning trips
A service learning trip combines travel, cultural learning, and supervised community work. Our article on high school volunteer abroad programs explains how strong programs keep students safe and learning.
In every type of program, high school students observe and support. Licensed professionals provide all patient care.
How to choose the right summer program
Use this checklist to compare options:
- Supervision and safety: Who supervises students day and night? What are the emergency plans?
- What students do: Ask for a sample daily schedule. Look for clear, age-appropriate roles.
- Ethics: Local professionals should lead patient care, and the program should work with community partners year-round.
- Learning value: Look for reflection sessions, workshops, and time to ask questions.
- Cost and support: Ask what the price includes and whether fundraising help or scholarships exist.
Safety is often the first concern for families. Our article on whether volunteering abroad is safe covers the questions to ask any program.
Tips for parents and counselors
Talk with your student about their goals before you compare programs. Some students want to confirm their interest in dentistry. Others want cultural and language experience. Both are valid reasons. Our article comparing service trips and dental internships can help families weigh these options.
Build a summer plan that fits
You do not need to choose only one option. Many students combine them across one or two summers. For example, a student might shadow a local dentist for a few days in June and then join a structured program in July. Others start with a short university camp and add community volunteering on weekends. Mixing options helps students compare settings and learn which parts of dental work interest them most. Keep the plan realistic, with rest time and room for summer jobs or family commitments.
How to get the most out of your summer
Whatever program you choose, a few habits help you learn more:
- Keep a short journal each day with what you saw and what surprised you.
- Ask professionals about their path and what they wish they had known.
- Track your hours and the name of your supervisor.
- Reflect on what you enjoyed and what you did not.
These notes help you choose college courses and talk about your interests later.
A dental service learning trip is one way to spend a summer exploring dentistry. On Smiles Movement trips, students shadow local dental professionals at mobile clinics and help with oral health education for children in partner communities. Trip leaders guide the group through orientation, daily activities, and reflection.
