Dental Work in Costa Rica: Understanding Oral Health Challenges in Underserved Communities

By: Mary Bourke, Oct 8, 2025 2:11:50 PM

Dental work in Costa Rica is a critical service, particularly in underserved communities where access to quality care is limited. While the country is known for its medical tourism, with many individuals traveling to Costa Rica for affordable and high-quality dental procedures, there are still many regions where local populations face significant barriers to receiving the care they need. In this blog, we explore some of the oral health challenges faced by underserved communities in Costa Rica and the efforts being made to bridge the gap in dental care.

Access to Dental Care in Underserved Communities

In rural areas and remote communities, dental work in Costa Rica is often seen as a luxury rather than a basic necessity. Many people in these areas face long distances to the nearest dental clinic and lack the financial resources to afford treatment. Without regular visits to a dentist, issues such as cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems go untreated and worsen over time. This can lead to chronic pain, difficulty eating, and, in some cases, long-term health issues.

Despite the progress in improving healthcare services in Costa Rica, there are still significant disparities in access to dental care. This is where organizations like Smiles Movement come in, offering crucial services to communities that would otherwise go without.

Smiles Movement’s Impact

At Smiles Movement, we are committed to improving the oral health of communities in need. Through our Service Learning Trips (SLTs), volunteers help provide dental work in Costa Rica to communities that would otherwise go without it. Our approach is holistic: we don’t just treat patients, but we also educate them about proper oral hygiene practices, the importance of routine check-ups, and preventative measures they can take to maintain their health.

By partnering with local healthcare providers, we ensure that the dental care we provide is culturally sensitive and that we are addressing the specific needs of each community. Whether we are offering free dental check-ups, performing restorative procedures like fillings, or educating community members on the importance of good oral health, we aim to make a lasting impact on the communities we serve.

The Importance of Education

In addition to providing essential dental care, educating communities about the importance of having access to dental work in Costa Rica plays a crucial role in long-term health outcomes. Through our SLTs, volunteers not only provide hands-on care, but they also help raise awareness about oral health. Educating people on how to brush properly, avoid sugary foods, and visit the dentist regularly is key to preventing future dental issues.

As we work in collaboration with local dentists and healthcare professionals, we also encourage community members to take ownership of their health. By fostering a culture of oral health education, we help people understand that taking care of their teeth and gums is as important as taking care of the rest of their body.
