If you want to volunteer abroad through dentistry, you have probably come across Dentists Without Borders. It is often mentioned as a global humanitarian dental option, but not all programs share the same structure, framework, or accessibility for early-stage students.
That is where Smiles Movement comes in. If you are looking for a Dentists Without Borders alternative, we offer short-term programs that follow ethical practices and focus on lasting community impact.
In short:
- Dentists Without Borders is commonly associated with long-term professional placements.
- Smiles Movement offers 1–2 week programs open to students and young professionals.
- Our volunteers observe, assist, and learn. Local professionals perform all procedures.
What Is Dentists Without Borders?
"Dentists Without Borders" usually refers to a broad group of independent humanitarian initiatives. They bring dentists to underserved regions or provide care to people who struggle to access it.
Organizations like Dentists Without Borders and 4smile often focus on free dental care for:
- Veterans
- Single parents
- Low-income families
- People experiencing homelessness
The American Dental Association also lists international volunteer programs for dental students and professionals in medically underserved areas.
All of these groups do meaningful work. Choosing between them depends on your experience, your availability, and your personal values. Here is why Smiles Movement may be the best fit for you.
How Smiles Movement Approaches Dental Volunteering Abroad
Smiles Movement was founded to remove roadblocks between people in underserved areas and dental care. We involve local professionals and community leaders in every project, so care continues after volunteers leave.
Our approach to ethical dental volunteering rests on three pillars:
- Ongoing patient monitoring after each trip
- Partnerships with local clinics
- Education on preventive care
We do not create solutions independently. Our teams work alongside local dentists and specialists to support existing strategies. Volunteers help bridge resource gaps rather than replace local capacity.

Dental Volunteer Opportunities for Students With No Experience
Many volunteer dentistry programs only accept licensed professionals or students already enrolled in dental school. Smiles Movement also offers structured opportunities for people with no previous experience.
On a project, volunteers will:
- Observe procedures
- Assist with non-clinical tasks
- Support educational activities
- Learn directly from local specialists
Volunteers do not perform any procedures. Their role is to assist and learn.
