You open your interview invitation and one word stands out: MMI. If you have never done one, the format can feel strange. An MMI interview in dentistry replaces one long conversation with a circuit of short, timed stations. Each station brings a new prompt and often a new interviewer.
The good news is that the MMI is a format you can learn. It rewards clear thinking and honest communication more than memorized answers. In this guide, you will learn how the stations usually work, which skills they are built to assess, and how to practice in a way that feels natural. You will also see how your real experiences, like volunteering or shadowing, give you material to draw on when a prompt catches you off guard.
What is an MMI interview in dentistry?
MMI stands for Multiple Mini Interview. The format was developed at McMaster University in Canada. Today, many health professions programs use it, including some dental schools in the US and Canada.
The idea is simple. You rotate through a series of stations. At each one, you read a short prompt posted outside the room. Then you go in and respond. When time is up, you move to the next station and start fresh. According to Michigan State University's pre-health advising office, MMIs typically include 4 to 10 stations that last 5 to 10 minutes each.
Common types of MMI stations
Every school designs its own circuit. Still, most stations fall into a few familiar groups:
- Personal stations: A direct question about your motivation, a challenge you faced, or why you chose dentistry.
- Ethical scenarios: A short dilemma. You explain how you would think it through and what you would do.
- Role-play stations: An actor plays a patient, classmate, or coworker. You respond to them as if the situation were real.
- Teamwork tasks: You work with another applicant to solve a problem or give instructions.
- Writing or break stations: Some circuits include a written response or a short rest.
How the MMI differs from a traditional interview
In a traditional interview, one or two people talk with you for 30 minutes or more. In an MMI, each station is scored on its own. That means one shaky answer does not define your whole day. You get many chances to make a good first impression. If you are also preparing for panel-style interviews, review these dental school interview tips.
Skills each MMI station is designed to assess
MMI stations rarely test dental knowledge. They look at how you think and how you treat people. Interviewers usually watch for these qualities:
- Communication: Can you explain your ideas clearly and listen well?
- Empathy: Do you consider how the other person feels?
- Ethical reasoning: Can you weigh different options and explain your choice?
- Self-awareness: Can you talk about a mistake and what you learned from it?
- Teamwork: Do you share ideas and make room for others?
Ethical prompts often worry students the most. A simple structure helps. First, restate the problem in one sentence. Second, name the people affected. Third, list two or three possible actions. Finally, choose one and explain why. You do not need a perfect answer. Interviewers want to see a fair, thoughtful process. For practice prompts, read our guide to ethical dental interview questions.
How to prepare for your MMI interview in dentistry
Practice with a timer
Timing is the hardest part for most applicants. Set a timer for two minutes to read a prompt. Then give yourself about seven minutes to respond out loud. Record yourself and listen back. Notice if you ramble, rush, or skip your conclusion. Practicing with friends from your pre-dental club also helps. Take turns playing the interviewer.
Check each school's format
Formats change from one cycle to the next. Some schools use a full MMI circuit. Others combine a few stations with a traditional interview. Some interviews happen online. Read each school's admissions page and any instructions in your invitation. Knowing what to expect lowers the stress.
Build a bank of real stories
Many stations invite you to share a personal example. Prepare six to eight short stories before interview day. Include a time you worked on a team, faced a conflict, made a mistake, and worked with a community. Keep each story focused on what you did and what you learned. Our article on discussing volunteering in interviews shows how to talk about service with honesty and detail.
Seek experiences that stretch your comfort zone
Role-play and ethics stations feel easier when you have spent time in unfamiliar settings. Working with people from different backgrounds builds patience and listening skills. A dental service learning trip is one way to gain that kind of experience. On Smiles Movement trips, students support local dental professionals, help prepare clinic stations, and take part in oral health education in partner communities. Those days often give students real moments to reflect on later.

Frequently asked questions about the dental school MMI
How long is a dental school MMI?
It depends on the school. MMIs commonly include 4 to 10 stations, and each station lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. Many circuits also include short reading time before each station.
Do I need dental knowledge for an MMI?
No. MMI stations focus on communication, ethics, empathy, and teamwork. Interviewers want to see how you reason through a situation. Basic awareness of current health topics can still help you give thoughtful answers.
Which dental schools use the MMI?
There is no single official list, and schools update their formats often. The most reliable source is each school's admissions website and your interview invitation.
